Console Overheating / Shutting Down
This symptom is very common once a Playstation or Xbox has been used for a few years. The console starts to just shutdown, often in the middle of playing a game for some time. In some cases, you may get an overheating warning but often it just turns itself off without any notice.
The problem is that the cooling system of the Playstation or Xbox is choked with dust and cannot work properly any more to keep the console at a sensible temperature. The fix is to completely strip the console down and deep clean it. When rebuilding, particular attention is paid to the thermal conductor material. On the PS5 this is oftn called Liquid Metal and on the Xbox this is high quality thermal paste. Re-applying, spreading or adding to the thermal conductor ensures good thermal contact betweent the APU and the cooling system. Keeping the console cool is important not only to be able to use it for a decent period of time but also relates to the life of the components on the motherboard.

I have nearly 40 years of experience in electronics and electrical engineering. When not working on domestic items, I work in the entertainment industry maintaining and repairing specialist lighting and sound equipment for concerts and other shows. I specialise in fixing things at component level, meaning diagnosis and replacement of individual faulty parts on a printed cicuit board (PCB). Often working without schematics, I trace faults using a range of diagnostic techniques and use soldering and rework methods to replace all kinds of electronic components.
My main goal is to promote a repair and re-use culture and give people the opportunity to have their electronic and electrical items repaired rather than having to throw good things away. Because of this, I also volunteer as a repairer at a local Repair Cafe in Weston-Super-Mare.
