From the original PS4, PS4 Slim and Pro, to the PS5 - all Playstation consoles have common faults that need repair. Take a look below to find your console and also infomation on the Blue Light Of Death (BLOD)

Playstation PS5

The PS5 is the newer generation console and has yet to really show their points of failure fully but we are starting to see common problems.

PS5 HDMI Port Replacement

By far the most common repair on these models is HDMI port replacement as a result of physical damage to the port. This is often caused by moving the console and catching the HDMI cable while still plugged in or by repeated plugging and unplugging of the cable. Luckily, the HDMI ports are repairable or replaceable on the PS5.

PS5 Shuts Down

If your PS5 suddeny shuts down, often without warning, the problem relates to either the power supply or the APU and the cooling of those parts. You'll be happy to know this is fixable.

PS5 Won't Start

Similar to faults with the PS4, the PS5 can exhibit different symptoms when it will not boot. This can include

  • No response to the Power button
  • Console beeps a few times then shuts back down
  • Console starts to boot but the LED light never moves from blue to white

PS5 Disk Drive Issues

At the moment, the Blu Ray / DVD drive is not a common source of problems with the PS5. However, all models of the PS4 do suffer from this so we'll see in the longer term.

Playstation PS4 Repairs

The first generation of the PS4 is an older console but still good for a while yet. The original PS4 is cheap to buy secondhand so complex repairs are often no longer economic, but don't forget you can use your Playstation as part exchange. Here are a few common repairs on the original PS4:

  • HDMI port replacement
  • Power button - console won't boot.
  • Blue Light of Death (BLOD)
  • Disk drive mechanical fault. Disks won't load or eject.
  • Disk drive reading problems. Disks spin games won't load.
  • Connection problems. WiFi or controllers keep losing connection to the console.
  • PS4 hard drive replacement / upgrade.
  • Cooling problems. PS4 overheats.
  • Clean and service your PS4 games console - the best preventative maintenance.

PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro

Still good consoles, the later generation PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro have common issues that are often fixable and this is usually more cost effective than replacement of the whole console. I can also take your faulty PS4 as part-exchange for a refurbished model, getting you back to gaming fast. The most common issues with the PS4 Slim and Pro are disk drive and overheating problems. The latter is often solved with a full service.

Some repairs on the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro include:

  • HDMI port replacement
  • Power button - console won't boot.
  • Blue Light of Death (BLOD)
  • Disk drive mechanical fault. Disks won't load or eject.
  • Disk drive reading problems. Disks spin games won't load.
  • Connection problems. WiFi or controllers keep losing connection to the console.
  • PS4 hard drive failure - replacement or upgrade.
  • Cooling problems. Your PS4 overheats.
  • Clean and service your PS4 games console - the best preventative maintenance.

PS4 and PS5 HDMI Replacement

A common repair on all PS4 and PS5 models is HDMI port replacement as a result of physical damage to the port. This is often caused by moving the console and catching the HDMI cable while still plugged in or by repeated plugging and unplugging of the cable. But don't feel like it's your fault. This is a well known failure point due to the design of the original factory ports. The main thing is to take action before your faulty port causes more damage. If the console will not output to screen AND your port looks mangled or the 'tongue' in the middle looks pushed in, have it replaced. If you have to angle your PS4 or PS5 HDMI cable, get it sorted before it gets worse. It's not an expensive repair but can cause other problems if not attended to.

Playstation PS4 and PS5 - Blue Light Of Death (BLOD)

The BLOD is a generic term to describe a variety of faults with the Sony Playstation, all with similar symptoms. In short, when your PS4 or PS5 has booted properly it will show a white light. While the console is starting up, it will show a blue light. The BLOD is where the console never gets to the white light stage and the light remains blue. (This is different to what is sometimes described as the 'White Light Of Death' which can be how people refer to the faults that are no image on screen.)

The reasons for the BLOD are various, can be difficult to track down, and can be uneconomic to repair depending on the console model and the exact symptoms. Overall, my advice would be if you have an older generation PS4 with the BLOD symptoms I suggest planning to replace it. You can drop it to me for an evaluation and there may be something I can do that is a cost effective fix, but be ready to just part-exchange it. At the other end of the spectrum, the PS5 BLOD is still uncharted territory for the repair business due to the console being fairly new. There is also only an emerging source of parts for the PS5, making BLOD repairs difficult. The PS5 console is still not cheap to replace, so it is worth seeking an evaluation and repair advice.

Playstation Controllers - all models

I can supply refurbished Dualshock 4 and Dualsense controllers, part-exchange your faulty one, or refurbish yours. These repairs including non-functioning buttons, power problems and stick drift.

The cheapest solution is repair or refurbishment of your controller. The fastest is part-exchange - bring me your faulty controller and I'll part-exchange it for a refurbished and fully working one right there and then.

I only sell and stock parts for genuine orginal Sony Playstation controllers and sadly I'm unable to take 3rd party gamepads for repair or exchange.

About

I have nearly 40 years of experience in electronics and electrical engineering. When not working on domestic items, I work in the entertainment industry maintaining and repairing specialist lighting and sound equipment for concerts and other shows. I specialise in fixing things at component level, meaning diagnosis and replacement of individual faulty parts on a printed cicuit board (PCB). Often working without schematics, I trace faults using a range of diagnostic techniques and use soldering and rework methods to replace all kinds of electronic components.

My main goal is to promote a repair and re-use culture and give people the opportunity to have their electronic and electrical items repaired rather than having to throw good things away. Because of this, I also volunteer as a repairer at a local Repair Cafe in Weston-Super-Mare.
